DIY holidays which is short for Do It Yourself holidays, is where you create your own holiday by booking the flights, transfers & hotel separately.
We understand that many of you might not have booked a DIY holiday before and probably have many questions regarding them, so we’ve tried our best to answer these questions below.
Are DIY Holidays Safe to Book?
Probably the most common question we get here at Personal Travel Planner, is it safe to book flights, hotel and transfers separately?
Yes, absolutely it’s safe, in fact more people travel using DIY holidays than package holidays.
All top suppliers of flights, hotels and transfers have cancellation policies protecting your money & a dedicated customer service helpline to assist you if you have any troubles.
If you’re not sure who the top suppliers are, check out most recommended holiday resources page.
Still Worried? Then we have three tips for your below.
Use a Flight + Hotel Service – Since 2012 ATOL now protects you if you book the hotel and flight through the same website.
Check out our most recommended flight and hotel services.
Book Using a Credit Card – If you pay anything over £100 per person for a part of the holiday than under Section 75 of the consume credit act credit card firms are jointly liable with retailers if something goes wrong. So if you have any problems with travel providers going bust than you will get your money back.
Buy Good Travel Insurance – Ensure you have a good travel insurance policy that includes end supplier failure. This covers you if any part of your DIY holiday has been cancelled because of the company going out of business.
What Are The Benefits of a DIY Holiday?
Saves You Money – Probably the best benefit of booking flights, transfers & hotel separately is the fact it can save you quite a good amount of money.
Tip – Save even more money booking each part throughout the year. With flight and hotel prices changing every day, you can generally save quite a lot of money by finding the flights & hotel you want and then checking the prices every other day before you book.
A great recent example of this is a holiday to Florida booked by one of our customers after using the Plan My American Holiday service. As our travel planner was very experienced with planning holidays to Florida, she advised checking the flight and hotel price every other day might save some money and our customer ended up saving an incredible £363 on flights and £198 on the hotel, totalling a saving of £561!
Gives You Freedom – When looking for holidays using the top package holiday suppliers such as Thomas Cook and Thomson you are generally limited to their own flights and the hotels they’ve bulk bought for the year.
With a DIY holiday you have the freedom of finding your own accommodation and flights, which means you have many more choices of accommodation to make your holiday special and a broader range of flights to make it cheaper.
Are DIY Holidays Always Cheaper?
Generally you can always create a DIY holiday cheaper than you can find the same holiday as a package, However this doesn’t always mean the quality of the holiday will be as good.
Package holiday companies only provide holidays through suppliers that they trust, which means they are at least up to a certain standard.
Where as hotel, transfers and flight companies will allow you to book any old hotel or flight without checking any of their reviews.
Therefore we would always recommend you read TripAdvisor reviews before booking any holiday to make sure it is up to your standards.
